The majority of those who have visited Dubai will concur that it is a shopping paradise while Dubai Shopping Festival. Dubai offers both a modern and traditional shopping experience with its many souks and retail centres.
The Dubai Shopping Festival, one of the biggest events of its kind, is held in the city every year and draws millions of tourists from all over the world.
There is likely nothing you can’t buy in the numerous modern malls and old souks scattered across the city, but if you ask me what to get from Dubai, I’ll recommend the following ten items.
1. Fragrances, Oud, and Bukhoor
Perfumes have long played a significant role in the Arab world. As you go through Dubai, you can smell several delicious odours.
Dubai’s perfume market has hundreds of shops offering a wide variety of fragrances to choose from. This includes branded perfumes that are available in other parts of the world. If you want to enjoy any of those perfume brands at a (probably) lower price, Dubai is the place to be.
Dubai, on the other hand, is well-known for its Arabian Oud and Bukhoor offerings.
Oud, also known as Oudh, is one of the world’s most expensive fragrances due to its scarcity. It is derived from the wood of the Southeast Asian agar tree (Agarwood). I recommend that you try a few traditional Oud scents and, if you can handle the strong fragrance, purchase some.
Another thing that comes to mind when I think of Oud is Bukhoor. Bukhoor literally translates to “scented bricks.” You burn a small piece of this ‘brick’ in a hob to add a luxurious scent to your home. These sticks burn slowly and emit a rich fragrance into your space.
Bakhoor, like Oud, is an important part of Arabic tradition. It is used not only in households, but also at social functions such as weddings. Do you want to create a romantic ambiance in your bedroom? You should try some Bakhoor!
Foreign perfumes, such as Oud or Bakhoor, can make excellent gifts for your loved ones. Bakhoor is also available on Amazon.
2. Jewellery made of gold and diamonds
Apart from its oil reserves, Dubai is well-known for its gold reserves. Dubai is known as the “city of gold” because it has so much gold to offer. Dubai is a gold buyer’s paradise for people from all over the world. The best place to buy gold is in Dubai’s gold souk, which has approximately 10 tonnes of gold on hand at any given time!
Simply walking into the souk will draw your attention to the gleaming gold jewellery. You’ll feel as if you’ve discovered an ancient emperor’s treasure and want to take it all home with you.
Of course, you might not be able to ‘take it all home,’ but you’d definitely want to buy something. Some before you leave town. Because of its tax policies, gold is relatively cheaper in Dubai.
In addition to gold, diamond and platinum jewellery can be purchased in Dubai.
3. Electronic Devices
Dubai’s tax policies make electronic items more affordable. This includes smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, gaming consoles, and other electronic devices. These and many other electronic items are available at lower prices than in other countries.
You may be wondering where to buy electronic items in Dubai. Go to Al-Fahidi Street in the Bur Dubai area. You can also go to a Sharaf DG or other electronics store in a mall.
Shopping Tip: Always compare prices in your home currency. If you are not getting much more benefit than in your home country, it is probably not worth it. Many brands do not offer international warranties, which can be inconvenient if your device fails.
4. Chocolates
In recent years, Dubai has emerged as a global business centre. Expats and businesses from all over the world have made Dubai their home. Similarly, Dubai has become a global hub for chocolate.
Although there is no connection between these two, Dubai has a large selection of chocolates. You can go anywhere in Dubai and find the best chocolates to choose from. Whether it’s a local chocolate brand or a well-known international brand,
These chocolates are inexpensive, and there are an abundance of them to choose from. They can make an ideal gift to take back home. I’ve seen people buy entire suitcases full of chocolates!
To find the finest chocolates from around the world, visit any supermarket, grocery store, mall, or Dubai Duty Free shop.
Shopping Tip: Try Chocodate, a local chocolate brand in Dubai. ‘Chocodate’ is essentially a nut inside a chocolate-covered date.
5. Dates
Dates, believe it or not, have been around for thousands of years. They have been grown in the Middle East for over 6000 years. In fact, dates are the oldest cultivated fruit. According to fossil records, the date palm has been around for approximately 50 million years!
Dates should not be ignored when visiting any Middle Eastern country, let alone the UAE. Dates have played an important role in Arabian history. It is eaten raw, used in desserts, served with coffee, used to make non-alcoholic beverages, and given as a gift at festivals. Muslims all over the world observe the holy month of Ramadan and break their fast, preferably with a date.
Dates have many health benefits in addition to a long and rich history. Iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, copper, phosphorous, sulphur, and manganese are all abundant in dates. They can assist your body in fighting conditions such as anaemia, heart problems, abdominal cancer, constipation, and so on.
To cut a long story short, dates are beneficial to your health. They have been around for thousands of years and are mostly manufactured in Middle Eastern countries.
If you walk into a mall or a souk, you will see a wide variety of dates. They differ in colour, structure, flavour, nutritional value, and cost. Taste a few before purchasing, and bring some with you on your way home.
6- Dried Fruits and Nuts
Dates, raisins, figs, apricots, and apples have long been popular in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries. They have been used for a variety of purposes in various traditions around the world.
Dried fruits are now produced and consumed worldwide. They are available in various regions at varying prices. The same is true for nuts.
If you visit Dubai, you will find the best dried fruits and nuts imported from all over the world. You might also find them cheaper.
7- Clothing, Shoes, and Watches
The same is true for watches, shoes, lingeries, and other accessories.
When is the best time to shop for clothes in Dubai? Every year, it takes place during the Dubai Shopping Festival in January and the Dubai Summer Surprises in July and August. I’ve heard that major brands offer discounts of up to 80% during these festivals.
8- Pashmina
I must admit that I find this term both beautiful and perplexing. ‘Pashmina,’ which means’made of wool,’ is a fine type of ‘cashmere wool.’ In some parts of the world, a girl child is also given the name Pashmina.
My confusion stems from the abundance of ‘fakes’ on the market. The amount of silk and cashmere wool used in a pashmina item can differ from its value and price. It is difficult to find the highest quality pashmina that is also reasonably priced.
You’re probably good at identifying fabrics and their quality. If this is the case, you will be able to find high-quality pashmina shawls, stoles, and scarves at reasonable prices throughout Dubai.
Pashmina items, particularly shawls and stoles, can make wonderful gifts for loved ones. Just make sure you pay the right price for it.
Shopping Tip: Look for ‘100% Pashmina’ scarves and shawls. ‘Made in Nepal’ everywhere in the UAE. They cost 10 dirhams each. It’s undoubtedly fake pashmina because it’s impossible to produce and sell pure ‘100% pashmina’ at such a low price. Avoid these unless you are willing to pay more for higher quality authentic pashmina clothing.
9- Sweets
Sweets are important in all cultures. Each country and region has at least one sweet dish associated with it, and the Middle East is no exception.
Traditional Middle Eastern sweets such as Baklawa, Umm Ali, Basbousa, and Qatayef are available in various parts of Dubai. To satisfy your sweet tooth, try any sweet dish at a local shop, and on your last day in Dubai, make sure to buy some fresh sweets to take back home.
You can also go to a Dubai Duty Free shop at Dubai International Airport and pick up some sweets right before your flight.
10- Rugs/carpets
Carpets have long been associated with Arabian history. And while you’re in Dubai, make sure to stop by Local markets (souks) where you can find high-quality rugs and carpets at reasonable prices.
Carpets vary in price. Machine-made carpets may be less expensive than hand-made ones. Handmade carpets, on the other hand, are of higher quality and deserve to be more expensive. Their cost varies depending on the material, quality, and amount of work done on them.
Shopping Tip: When shopping in local markets, don’t forget to haggle. Merchants will almost certainly try to persuade you that an item’s value is correct, but bargaining will help you settle on a better price for most items.
